5 out of 5 stars Heavy Duty   June 20, 2010

I have been using the Heavy Grip brand grips by Heavy Sports for training. As I was ready to move up to the 200lb Heavy Grip, I purchased the #2 Captains of Crush (rated at 195 lb) as well as the Heavy Grip 200 and 250 lb grips for comparison. The CoC website states there are differences in the pressure ratings of other grips. Though I like the Heavy Grip grips and the principle of training is the same with both the Heavy Grip and CoC, there is definately a difference in the ratings. I am able to fully close the HG 200 about 3 reps, but I can only get the CoC # 2 near full closure. In comparing the CoC #2 grip to both the HG 200 and 250lb, I would say the CoC #2 is somewhere between the HG 200 and HG 250 lb grips for pulling pressure.

Both brands are quality grips and the training principles and results of a better, stronger grip are the same. However, buyers do need to realize there is differences in the pound ratings. Both grips have knurled handles and like weight lifting free weights, your hands will get eaten up at first then toughen up with continued use. So, if you want to maintain soft hands then soak them in Palmolive dish soap. If you want to strengthen your grip and forearms, these grips are what you need.

5 out of 5 stars Best gripper on the market.   June 6, 2010

These are very well made. They are leaps and bounds better than the ones I had as a kid. I bought the trainer based on some of these recommendations and it was a good starting point, but I quickly ordered the #1 & #2! After only a couple days training with them I can close the "T" 5x10, turn it up side down and do 20 reps, then turn it over right-side up and do a crush and hold for 10 seconds. I could also add more sets or just go to failure, but the brochure said to keep the reps low. This is why I need the #1 as my working gripper and the #2 as my challenge gripper. I have heard that the #2 is very tough, so I can't wait to try. My goal is the #3 cert.

A couple people mentioned here that the knurling is a bit rough on the hands. I agree, and here is my tip: take a length of masking tape and place it on the lead edge of one handle where your fingers wrap around. After a few grips, the tape with conform to the knurling and it will still have enough traction to stay put. After a few training sessions, you can remove the tape. Initially, I had a couple sore spots because I normally wear gloves for weightlifting.

A few people mentioned spring rust, so here is my second tip: Clean and lube the spring with a CLP-type oil, then wipe off the excess. Do NOT lube the handles!

I also bought a IMTUG #4 to supplement my training. I am sure it is everything they say it is.

5 out of 5 stars correct knurling   June 2, 2010

These crushers are good because they have the handle knurling just right(for me any way). The "Heavy" competitor slips under my fingers sometimes; which ruins the squeeze. This one never slips, I guess, because the knurl cut is a little bit deeper.

The numbers they assign these grippers are not the same between manufacturers. The #1.5(167) crush is tougher than the heavy 200!

Awesome item (Trainer), I am using this item to increase and even out my single handed grip strength, for Kuk Sool (Korean MA -[...]) lots of grabs and trapping. These will not only maximize your grip strength training but also build up calluses to get rid of those "girly-man" hands.

This review is for the #1 CoC -
No surprise another well made product from iron mind. Maybe for some perspective on which one to start with - I am almost 40 yrs old, 230lbs, practice KUK SOOL (Korean MA) at least 2 times a week, can curl 50lbs each arm about 5-6 reps, and can bench 210 lbs. I have been using the Trainer for a few months and have gotten up to 25L and 30R reps. But on the #1 I just started using can only get 5 reps on the right and 4.5 on the left, Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product   April 4, 2010

This is a great product. I like the Numeric rating of grip resistance compared to other grippers. One complaint though is the grip is tough on your hands. After use your hands can end out worn raw. I took some #600 sandpaper to smooth it out a bit. Just enough that the pattern does not dig into my skin so much, and not too much to remove the needed grip against my skin. I started with the trainer and have since ordered the #1. It's actually quite impressive how something which I could barely close in my left hand, i can now close 30 reps. Having just the right resistance really helps you build strength.
